2025 Rivian R1S: Performance, Features, and Specs

2025 Rivian R1S: A Powerful Three-Row Electric SUV

The 2025 Rivian R1S builds on its predecessor’s success as a three-row electric SUV, sharing core strengths with the R1T pickup. It delivers impressive acceleration, extended range, off-road capabilities, and a premium interior, wrapped in a distinctive design. Rivian has introduced significant hardware updates for the 2025 model, dubbing it a “second-generation” version, though it feels more like an R1S.2 iteration. Enhancements include revised suspension tuning for better handling and a new 850-horsepower Tri-Motor powertrain, positioned between the standard Two-Motor and the Quad-Motor versions. The Quad-Motor variant now boasts an astounding 1050 horsepower. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the 15 inches of ground clearance from the standard air suspension, while a maximum range of 410 miles minimizes charging stops. Despite its strengths, the R1S faces growing competition from newer, more affordable three-row electric SUVs like the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 7, and Volvo EX90.

2025 Rivian R1S: What’s New for 2025?

Rivian has introduced an all-new electrical architecture for the 2025 R1S, reducing weight by over 44 pounds. The Standard battery now features a lithium-iron-phosphate design, while models with Large and Max batteries get revised range estimates. The new Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor powertrains utilize Rivian’s in-house electric motors. Additional updates include redesigned 20-inch and 22-inch wheels, an upgraded user interface with new graphics, and enhanced driver-assistance features. A new Connect+ subscription offers GoogleCast video streaming and Apple Music integration, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain absent. The Adaptive Drive Beam headlamp technology enhances night visibility without blinding oncoming drivers and will be introduced via a software update in late 2024. A new California Dune Edition trim joins the lineup, featuring desert-inspired paint and standard off-road upgrades.

2025 Rivian R1S: Pricing and Best Trim Choice

The 2025 Rivian R1S starts at $77,700, with pricing reaching $107,700, depending on the trim and options.

TrimPrice
Adventure$77,700
California Dune Edition$105,900
Premium$107,700
Ascend$107,700

The full pricing breakdown is still pending, but the Adventure Dual-Motor starts at $77,700, while the Ascend trim (available in Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor versions) begins at $107,700. For the best balance of performance and price, the Adventure trim with the Dual-Motor powertrain and Large battery at $84,700 is a solid choice. Meanwhile, the Tri-Motor Premium and Ascend models are priced at $107,700, with the Premium Quad-Motor reaching $117,000.

2025 Rivian R1S: EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The standard Dual-Motor setup delivers 553 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque, while the Performance Dual-Motor option increases output to 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft via a software upgrade. The new Tri-Motor configuration (two rear motors, one front motor) generates 850 horsepower and 1103 lb-ft of torque, offering significant performance gains. The Quad-Motor version reaches an impressive 1050 horsepower and 1198 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 215 horsepower and 290 lb-ft over the 2024 model.

Beyond raw power, the Quad-Motor system enhances off-road performance with a one-wheel, one-motor design, functioning similarly to front and rear locking differentials. If even one wheel has traction, the R1S can move forward. To improve ride quality, Rivian has upgraded air springs, adaptive dampers, suspension bushings, and hydraulic roll-mitigation systems, refining steering precision and body control. Early test drives suggest these changes significantly reduce body roll, squat under hard acceleration, and head movement, leading to a smoother and more controlled driving experience.

The 2025 Rivian R1S continues to push the boundaries of electric SUVs, offering blistering acceleration, extended range, and advanced technology. With the introduction of a new Quad-Motor setup, Rivian estimates a sub-2.5-second 0–60 mph time for the 2025 R1T pickup, while the heavier R1S SUV is expected to achieve around 2.9 seconds. Our previous tests recorded a 3.1-second run with the 2022 R1S Launch Edition, making the new model one of the fastest SUVs ever. Rivian has also raised the top speed from 110 mph to 130 mph.

2025 Rivian R1S: Towing and Payload Capacity

The 2025 Rivian R1S maintains its impressive 7,700-pound towing capacity and a projected 1,764-pound payload capacity. While official confirmation is pending, Rivian assures no compromise in performance. However, like most EVs, towing significantly reduces range, as observed with the R1T pickup in past tests.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The 2025 R1S offers three battery pack options:

  • Standard Pack: 92.5 kWh, 270-mile range (Dual-Motor)
  • Large Pack: 109.4 kWh, optimized for efficiency
  • Max Pack: 141.5 kWh, up to 410 miles (Dual-Motor setup)

A 2022 Quad-Motor R1S with a Large battery achieved 230 miles in a real-world 75-mph highway test. Charging times vary by pack size:

  • Standard Pack: 200 kW max charge rate
  • Large & Max Packs: 220 kW max charge rate

A DC fast charge from 10% to 80% takes 30-41 minutes, while a full charge from 10% to 90% took 61 minutes in our tests.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

Efficiency improvements in the 2025 Rivian R1S increase its best Dual-Motor trim to 85 MPGe combined, up 3 MPGe from 2024. Other trims range from 72 to 84 MPGe, depending on wheel size and configuration. Official EPA ratings for Tri- and Quad-Motor variants are forthcoming.
